The Greatest Book

By Ronnie Lowe

There are many great books in the world today, but only one can be the greatest. The greatest book of today is the same book that has been the greatest for centuries. It is the greatest book because it is the only one of its kind. All other books have been authored by human beings, but only one is of divine authorship. That one is the Bible. This book has done more to change the world than any other book.

The Bible is the only book that can lead us successfully through this life and into eternity. In bidding farewell to the Ephesian elders, Paul stated, “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). The Bible deals with many different subjects for it discusses matters of history, geography, science, and many other areas; but the Bible is first of all a book of religion. No other book can do what the Bible can do.

The Bible is a wonderful gift from God. It is a product of his love as he expresses that love in the many things he has done and continues to do for mankind. The Bible is not the product of human imagination, but it originated in the mind of God. “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). It not only contains the word and will of God, but the power of God as well. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword ...” (Hebrews 4:12). God has not given us this book without reason, but has provided it so that man might be “complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).

The Bible is also a lamp of life. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). It provides the answers to man’s greatest and most important questions. Of all the books in existence, only the Bible is able to lead us successfully through this life and into eternity.

Likewise, it is the voice of a friend forever near. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me, Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). The voice and counsel of an all-wise God is as near as the Bible. If I need instruction, consolation, sympathy, or help in any other way, the Bible is always there. It is the only book that can deal with my every state of mind.

It is indeed the most precious and powerful book in all the world. Let us read it diligently and dutifully with eternity in view.
